What crews ask the harbour master in Masuria
There are shops and ATMs near the larger ports, a shower usually costs 15 PLN per token, and you cannot pay by card everywhere. Five Orlen stations sell fuel on the water, and you buy a fishing permit from the fish farm that leases the lake in question. The prices and opening hours below come from the 2026 season.
The harbour master assigns you a spot at the quay and collects the fees, so that is who you go to with every question. We have gathered the 14 questions harbour masters in Giżycko hear most often from charter crews, with short answers and links to longer guides. Many answers depend on the port, so when choosing a yacht also check the charter locations. Before the 2027 season, confirm prices at the harbour master's office.
Shopping, fuel and food
Where is the nearest grocery shop?
There is a grocery shop within the ports in Sztynort, AZS Wilkasy and Wierzba. In Giżycko, Mikołajki, Ryn and Węgorzewo the shop is a few minutes' walk from the marina. From Ekomarina in Giżycko it is approx. 370 m to the nearest shops. Around Port Royal on Kisajno and in Kamień on Bełdany there is no shop within approx. 900 m, so do your grocery shopping from the yacht earlier, in town.
Where is the petrol station?
In Giżycko, the Orlen at al. 1 Maja 20 and the station at ul. Białostocka 43 are open 24 hours. From Ekomarina to the nearest Orlen it is approx. 1.2 km. There are also 24-hour stations in Węgorzewo, in Ruciane-Nida and in Prawdowo near Mikołajki. You carry fuel in jerrycans by car within the limit of 60 l per container and 240 l per car. How much to take depends on how much a houseboat or motorboat burns.
Where can I refuel on the water?
There are five Orlen stations on the water along the route, in Giżycko, Mikołajki, Sztynort, Węgorzewo and Ryn. They sell 95 petrol and diesel, in the 2026 season usually from 8 am to 8 pm, every day. The Giżycko station is on Niegocin at the entrance to the Łuczański Canal, which was closed to yachts in 2026, so from Kisajno you had to get there via the detour through Tajty. There are no stations on the water on Śniardwy or Bełdany, so before a longer leg check the map of fuel stations on the water.
Is there a restaurant at the port?
In the larger ports, yes. In Sztynort there are three restaurants, including Baba Pruska and Tawerna Zęza, in Mikołajki there are places to eat all along the waterfront, and in Giżycko there is a restaurant in the Ekomarina building. AZS Wilkasy, the port in Wierzba, Klub Mila in Kamień and Przystań Wodnik in Ruciane-Nida also have their own kitchens. Small marinas sometimes have only a bar. Check where to eat from the yacht along your route.
Questions at the port about cards, showers, toilets and parking
Can I pay by card at the port?
At some ports yes, but not everywhere. Have cash for small charges, i.e. shower tokens, the toilet and emptying the toilet cassette. The port regulations in Sztynort explicitly mention payment cards, and there is an ATM in the port. On maps, the Ekomarinas in Giżycko and Węgorzewo are marked as accepting cards, and the Orlen station on the water in Giżycko takes cards. There is an ATM approx. 80 m from Ekomarina in Giżycko, approx. 85 m from Wioska Żeglarska (the Sailing Village) in Mikołajki and approx. 40 m from Ekomarina in Ryn. You usually pay the deposit to the yacht owner in cash.
Can I pay with BLIK (the Polish mobile payment app) at the port? Do not count on it. The price lists and regulations of the ports along the route do not mention BLIK, so it is safer to carry a card and some cash.
How much is a shower at the port?
A shower in a Masurian port usually costs 15 PLN, and in official price lists from recent years between 14 and 20 PLN. You pay for a token that gives you a few minutes of water, from 4 to 10 minutes depending on the port. In some ports the shower is included in the mooring fee.
| Port | Shower | Price list year |
|---|---|---|
| Port Royal, Giżycko | 14 PLN for 5 min | 2027 |
| Ekomarina Giżycko | 15 PLN | port website, 2026 |
| AZS Wilkasy | 15 PLN for 5 min (token) | 2026/2027 |
| Ekomarina Węgorzewo | 15 PLN including WC | 2026 |
| Przystań Wodnik, Ruciane-Nida | 15 PLN for 6 min | 2026 |
| Ekomarina Roś, Pisz | 15 PLN for 10 min | 2025 |
| Wioska Żeglarska, Mikołajki | 18 PLN for 4 min | 2026 |
| Ekomarina MKŻ, Mikołajki | 20 PLN for 5 min | 2024 |

Is the shower ever included in the mooring fee? Yes. In Sztynort the port fee of 30 PLN per person includes unlimited access to the toilets and showers, and at Ekomarina in Węgorzewo the shower is included in the 25 PLN per person fee for an overnight stay.
Where can I empty a chemical toilet?
You can empty a chemical toilet cassette at the Ekomarinas and larger ports, free of charge or for anything from a few to a few dozen PLN. According to 2026 price lists, AZS Wilkasy does it for free, Ekomarina in Węgorzewo charges 5 PLN, Giżycko 10 PLN and Wioska Żeglarska in Mikołajki 20 PLN. In Sztynort, emptying the cassette is included in the port fee. A fixed holding tank is emptied by a pump-out station, e.g. at Ekomarina in Giżycko for 15 PLN. Nothing goes into the lake. At handover, ask how the toilet and water on the yacht work.
Is the car park monitored?
Few ports confirm monitoring. The Ekomarina grounds in Giżycko have CCTV, and the port in Sztynort has security staff, cameras and entry control. Parking in Sztynort costs 25 PLN per day or 150 PLN per week with a charter, according to the port price list. According to their regulations, the municipal car parks in Giżycko and Mikołajki are unguarded. Where to leave your car during the cruise is compared in a separate article.
Is the port liable for my car in a monitored car park? Do not count on it. Monitoring does not mean liability for the car, and the Giżycko and Mikołajki municipalities state explicitly in their regulations that they are not responsible for vehicles left there.
Fish, swimming and nights outside port
Where can I buy a fishing permit?
You buy the permit from the fish farm that leases the lake, because there is no single permit for the whole route. Niegocin and Kisajno are managed by Gospodarstwo Rybackie (the fish farm) in Giżycko, Tałty, Mikołajskie and Bełdany by GR Mikołajki, Śniardwy by GR Śniardwy, and Mamry, Tajty and Nidzkie by PZW (the Polish Angling Association). A day's fishing from a boat cost 45 to 60 PLN in 2026. You also need a fishing card. A list of sales points and online shops can be found in our guide on where to buy a fishing permit.
Does a child need a fishing card? Not up to the age of 14, but they may only fish under the supervision of an adult who holds a card. With GR Mikołajki, children up to 14 fish within the supervising adult's licence and catch limit.
Can I swim here and is there a beach?
Yes, there is no general ban on swimming from a yacht, but outside a bathing area you swim without a lifeguard. It is not allowed by a no-swimming sign, in nature reserves, or in harbour basins if the port regulations forbid it, as in Sztynort. The penalty is a fine of up to 250 PLN. In 2026 there were supervised bathing areas in Giżycko, Mikołajki, Węgorzewo and Pisz, among others, but not in Wilkasy, Sztynort or Ruciane-Nida. The season dates for each bathing area are collected in our article on swimming from a yacht and bathing areas.
Where can I moor in the wild?
For the night you anchor in a sheltered bay, away from the fairway, with a white anchor light. You do not go ashore on the 20 reserve islands on Mamry and Kisajno, and you enter Zatoka Wygryńska and Zatoka Iznocka on Bełdany without the engine. Stopping is prohibited under bridges and on the approaches to marinas, among other places. The route is suitable for daytime navigation only, so choose your bay before dark, and check the remaining rules in our guide on wild mooring.
Children and evenings
Where should we sail with children?
With children, stick to the route through Giżycko, Mikołajki, Bełdany and Nidzkie, with legs of 2 to 3 hours a day. Giżycko and Mikołajki have the most attractions ashore. In Giżycko there is Twierdza Boyen (Boyen Fortress), where children under 7 get in free, and the playground by the graduation tower on the Łuczański Canal, and in Mikołajki a water park and a supervised town beach. Ideas for the following days can be found in our overview of attractions for children in Masuria.
How do I plan a week's cruise with children?
Plan short legs and a spare day for the weather. From Giżycko to Mikołajki realistically takes 5 to 6 hours, so split this route over two days with a night on the way, e.g. in Rydzewo. From Mikołajki to Ruciane-Nida it is an hour and a half to two hours plus the Guzianka lock. The Łuczański Canal was closed to yachts in 2026; check the status for 2027 in the notices from Wody Polskie (the Polish water authority). The whole route is set out in our one-week cruise plan with children.
Where are the concerts?
Concerts on stages by the water take place in summer in Giżycko, Mikołajki, Wilkasy, Węgorzewo and Sztynort. At the port in Sztynort there is live music almost every day, and the sea shanty festivals are in Giżycko in July and in Mikołajki at the turn of July and August. Most of the 2027 dates have not yet been announced. The exception is the 46th Piknik Country in Mrągowo, on 23 and 24 July 2027, but you cannot get there by yacht. The usual event dates are shown in our calendar of concerts in Masuria.
