Masuria Attractions for Kids — What to Do With the Family on Water and Land

A practical guide to family attractions in Masuria: lake cruises, Giżycko and Mikołajki with kids, rope parks, the Wild Animal Park in Kadzidłowo, beaches and a rainy-day plan — plus how to see the lakes from a family yacht.

Masuria with kids is far more than a beach and ice cream by the lake. The Great Masurian Lakes region is packed with family-friendly attractions: scenic passenger cruises, fortresses to explore, rope parks, hands-on animal encounters and plenty of supervised swimming spots. The easiest way to see it all is with a floating base — from the deck of a family yacht or houseboat you sail from town to town, and the beach is always just over the side. Below is a practical plan: what to do on the water, in Giżycko and Mikołajki, on land, and what to do when it rains. Always check current opening hours and prices before you set off.

On the water — cruises and a first taste of sailing

The simplest way to get kids to fall for the lakes is a short cruise on the white fleet. Żegluga Mazurska is the largest passenger operator in Masuria — its boats run in season (roughly May–September) from ports in Giżycko, Mikołajki, Ryn, Węgorzewo and Ruciane-Nida. Sightseeing cruises last from under an hour, and children up to 15 travel on reduced tickets. Routes cross lakes such as Niegocin, Mamry and Śniardwy and the 18th-century Masurian canals — exciting for little ones, as the boat threads through narrow channels right alongside the shore.

If you want more than an hour on deck, the natural next step is your own boat for a few days. A family houseboat or cabin yacht gives kids a sense of adventure and parents peace of mind: galley, berths and a toilet are all on board, and in the evening you moor by a supervised beach. Many boats can be hired with no license, so you need no sailing qualifications — just a short briefing at handover. Take a look at our family houseboats too if you want maximum space and comfort.

Crucially, your own boat gives a freedom no hotel can: you plan the day around the kids, not around a timetable. A lie-in in the morning, a swim in a quiet bay at noon, a short hop to the next jetty after lunch. Little ones quickly get into 'helping' — holding the wheel under a parent's eye, throwing lines, spotting buoys and birds. It's a natural lesson in independence, with plenty of fresh-air time far from screens. For a trip with children it's worth bringing child-sized life jackets (often included — ask when you book), sunscreen, hats and a few games for the evening.

Giżycko with kids

Giżycko makes a great base for a family day on land. The biggest thrill is the swing bridge from 1898 — one of very few in the world still turned by hand, with a crank, by a single operator; kids love watching the steel structure slowly swing aside to let boats through. Right next to it begins Boyen Fortress, a 19th-century star-shaped stronghold — vast ramparts, gates and walls that impress and give endless room to run.

On Lake Niegocin you'll find a wide, sandy, supervised town beach with a playground, and beside it the modern Ekomarina with a viewing pier, eateries and water-gear rentals. For thrill-seeking kids there's a rope park with routes from easy 'toddler' levels to a zipline over the water (check the minimum height and age). After a stroll it's worth heading to the harbour passage for ice cream or waffles, and in the evening to the promenade, where open-air concerts are often held. If you spot a fair or a bouncy castle, that usually happens right by the beach too. Giżycko is a convenient port to start from — if you're planning a charter, see our yacht charter in Giżycko.

Mikołajki with kids

Mikołajki, the 'pearl of Masuria', is exceptionally family-friendly. The heart of the town is the Sailing Village on Lake Mikołajskie, right by the centre — cruises set off from here, and this is where the long, kilometre-plus promenade of jetties and footbridges ends. Along the way children find small playgrounds, ice cream and waffles, and Żegluga Mazurska boats sail daily from the port, including large sailing ships that impress even the youngest.

The town swimming area on Okrężna Street is fenced, lifeguarded and equipped with toilets and showers — safe and convenient for families. The beach usually has volleyball courts and a water-gear rental, so older kids have something to do while the youngest build sandcastles. Mikołajki is also a good starting point for a cruise across Śniardwy, the largest lake in Poland — just remember it's a big, open body of water, so with small children pick calm weather. If you'd like to set off from here, see our yacht charter in Mikołajki or, if you only have one free day, a day charter with a skipper at the helm.

Attractions on land

The biggest natural hit for families is the Wild Animal Park in Kadzidłowo, on the Ruciane-Nida–Mikołajki route in the heart of the Pisz Forest. Across some 100 hectares live several hundred animals: lynx, wolves, moose, deer, fallow deer and tarpan horses. Many are tame, so children can enter parts of the enclosures to feed and pet them. Visits are guided along a roughly 2 km trail — hours vary by season, so check before you arrive.

  • Beaches and swimming areas — almost every town has a supervised, sandy bathing spot, ideal for an afternoon with kids.
  • Rope parks — in Giżycko, Mikołajki and nearby; routes matched to height and age, with safety harnesses.
  • Farms and mini-zoos — contact with ponies, goats and rabbits, cart rides and playgrounds; great for younger children.
  • Cycle paths — surfaced routes around the lakes, with many rentals offering kids' bikes and trailers.

A rainy-day plan

Masurian weather can surprise you, so it's worth having a plan B. Good bets are the atmospheric brine graduation towers in Giżycko, an umbrella stroll along the floodlit Łuczański Canal and the Ekomarina pier, and exploring the covered parts of Boyen Fortress. When it really pours, indoor play areas, pools and activity rooms at many resorts and farms save the day. On a boat the rain bothers you least: the cabin is a warm shelter for a board game, and minutes later you're back on deck.

The most freedom comes from combining several of these into one floating mini-break. From the deck you tour Giżycko one day, moor in Mikołajki the next, and swim at wild beaches you'd never reach by car along the way.
