How to plan a week on a yacht with children

With children, spend two or three hours a day on the water, four at most, and the rest of the day ashore or at a bathing area. For a Saturday-to-Saturday week, the southern part of the route works best: Giżycko, Mikołajki and Ruciane-Nida. Split the stretch from Giżycko to Mikołajki over two days, because with the canals it realistically takes five or six hours.

We have been suggesting the two-to-three-hour limit to families for years, because after that children start to get bored. At almost every stop in this plan there is something to do ashore or a bathing area with a lifeguard, and midweek there is time in reserve for wind and rain. This is one of the questions harbour masters hear most often, and short answers to the others are collected in our questions to ask the harbour master.

Leave the north, that is Mamry and Węgorzewo, for another year. In strong winds Mamry builds a short, steep chop, and the way north from Niegocin runs through the Łuczański Canal in Giżycko. In the 2026 season the canal was closed to yachts because of the bypass construction, and it is not known what will happen in 2027. This plan does not need it, because from day one it heads south from Niegocin. If you are picking up your yacht on Kisajno, ask the yacht owner about the way to Niegocin, because in 2026 there was a detour via the Piękna Góra Canal and Tajty.

Day-by-day plan for a cruise with children

The plan assumes you pick up the yacht on Saturday afternoon in Giżycko or at a port on Niegocin and return it the following Saturday morning. The times in the table are for a yacht under engine at 8 to 10 km/h, without waiting at the lock.

Distances according to Wody Polskie (the Polish water authority) and a 2014 press guide. From Giżycko to Mikołajki it is about 40 km, from Mikołajki to Ruciane-Nida 15 to 17 km. A week for an adult crew, including Śniardwy and the north, is set out in our 7-day cruise plan.

Giżycko for the first and last day

The first evening goes on unpacking, so something close by is enough for the children. On ul. Nadbrzeżna, by the Łuczański Canal, the town has set up a recreation area with a brine graduation tower, a playground and hammocks. On Sunday morning, before you cast off, there is time for Twierdza Boyen (Boyen Fortress), open in July and August from 9:00 am to 8:00 pm (the ticket office closes an hour earlier). A ticket costs 25 PLN, reduced 20 PLN, and children under 7 get in free, according to the fortress website in 2026.

Instead of the fortress you can choose the municipal bathing area on ul. Kolejowa on Niegocin, open in 2026 from 29 June to 31 August, with lifeguards in season. It also comes in handy on Friday, when you are back early and have an afternoon left before handing back the yacht.

Two days to Mikołajki and what to do there

Between Giżycko and Mikołajki there are about 40 km of water and five canals. That is too much for one family day, so the first night falls in Rydzewo or on Jagodne. The further you get on Sunday, the easier Monday will be. In peak season, aim to reach port in the early afternoon, because after 3 pm free berths disappear quickly.

In Mikołajki the municipal bathing area is on ul. Okrężna on Jezioro Mikołajskie and in 2026 it was open from 15 June to 31 August. For rainy days there is the Tropikana water park at the Gołębiewski hotel, where children up to 14 pay 35 PLN for an hour and a half, adults 70 PLN, and toddlers up to 4 get in free. The hotel website does not give the year of the price list, so check it before your visit.

Ruciane-Nida and the Guzianka lock

From Mikołajki to Ruciane-Nida you sail along Bełdany, and near the end of the route the Guzianka lock awaits. For children this is usually the most exciting hour of the week, because the yacht enters the chamber and the water level changes by about 2 m. In July and August 2026 Guzianka I operated from 10 am to 9 pm and Guzianka II from 9 am to 7 pm. In peak season there can be queues, so set off in the morning.

There is no designated bathing area in Ruciane-Nida; in 2026 there was none on the lists of Wody Polskie or the sanitary inspectorate. Save swimming for Mikołajki, and here go for the forest and a quiet evening. The navigable route on Jezioro Nidzkie ends after about 3 km, beyond which there is a nature reserve.

If you would rather skip the lock, sail to Ryn. From Mikołajki you go back to Tałty and turn into the 12-kilometre arm leading to Jezioro Ryńskie. The Żegluga Mazurska passenger boat takes 1 h 40 min from Mikołajki, a yacht longer. By Ekomarina there was a restaurant with an ice cream parlour (2024 data), a castle stands above the town, and Ryn's bathing area with a lifeguard is on Lake Ołów, so check the walk from the port on a map.

Śniardwy, the weather and plan B

In strong winds Śniardwy builds a short, steep chop, which is why with children you only cross it in light winds. The easiest way to show it to children is from the deck of a passenger boat. The “Śniardwy w Pigułce” (Śniardwy in a nutshell) cruise from Mikołajki lasts 3 hours and in 2026 cost 115 PLN, reduced 75 PLN, and the Żegluga Mazurska reduced fare covers children and young people aged 5 to 18.

Tuesday and Wednesday are your weather reserve. When it is windy or pouring, instead of sailing to Ruciane you stay a second day in Mikołajki. Friday is short too and gives you some slack in case the wind holds you up earlier on Thursday.

There are 17 masts of the Wody Polskie warning system on the Great Masurian Lakes. A light flashing 40 times a minute means caution, i.e. an approaching storm or strong wind. At 90 flashes a minute an alarm has been declared, so you look for a safe place straight away. The system works during the day, in the navigation season, and you do not sail after dark anyway, because the route is only suitable for navigation in daylight.

On 7 August 2026, on Lake Seksty, a sudden gust capsized four sailing boats from a summer camp carrying 31 children and their supervisors. They were all wearing life jackets and they were all rescued. MOPR (the Masurian water rescue service) then appealed: “whenever the weather is forecast to get worse, return to port”. In an emergency call 112 or 601 100 100; other ways are described in our guide on how to call for help in Masuria.

Life jackets and a yacht for the family

Under the regulations on safety in water tourism, a person who cannot swim must wear a life jacket or buoyancy aid on a yacht, and the skipper decides on the rest. Children are not listed separately there, but in practice a small child belongs to this group, so they wear a life jacket whenever they are on deck or on the jetty.

You choose a life jacket by weight, and the weight range is on the label. Look for a collar that supports the head, a crotch strap and a grab handle on the back. A 50 N buoyancy aid is not a life jacket and is not suitable for children under 30 kg. Confirm children's sizes and guardrail netting with the yacht owner before booking, and if there are no children's life jackets, bring your own. Buoyancy classes are described in our article on which life jacket to give a child.

With small children, a houseboat can be more convenient. It has a flat bottom and a large deck, involves no tacking, and you can almost always skipper it without a licence, although it is sensitive to crosswinds when manoeuvring in port. You can check available dates among the houseboats in Masuria. More ideas for days ashore can be found in our overview of attractions for children in Masuria, and where you are allowed to swim outside bathing areas is covered in our article on swimming from a yacht and beaches.

Frequently asked questions

How many hours a day should we sail with children? Two or three hours, four at most. Leave the rest of the day for a bathing area, a playground or sightseeing.

Does a child have to wear a life jacket on a yacht? The regulation requires a life jacket or buoyancy aid for people who cannot swim, and the skipper decides the rest. A small child should wear a life jacket matched to their weight the whole time they are on deck.

Where are the bathing areas with lifeguards on this route? In Giżycko on ul. Kolejowa and in Mikołajki on ul. Okrężna, and in the Ryn variant also on Lake Ołów. In 2026 Ruciane-Nida, Wilkasy and Sztynort had no designated bathing area.

Will the Łuczański Canal be open in 2027? That is not yet known. In 2026 it was closed to yachts, so before your cruise check the navigation notices from Wody Polskie in Białystok. The plan in this article does not need the canal.
