What are the Karwik lock opening hours in 2026?

Karwik lock sits on the Jegliński Canal between Lake Seksty and Lake Roś (km 6+000 of the Pisz–Węgorzewo waterway). In the 2026 season it operates under Navigation Notice No. 2/2026: 9:00–20:00 in July and August, 9:00–18:00 in September and 9:00–16:00 in October. Locking a yacht through during the day costs PLN 10.90.

The hours are set by the Regional Water Management Authority of Wody Polskie in Białystok. It publishes them in the notice that opens the season on the Great Masurian Lakes. In 2026 the notice came out on 21 April and the waterway opened to navigation on 24 April. Here is the full schedule for Karwik:

MonthKarwik lock opening hours 2026
April9:00–17:00
May9:00–17:00
June10:00–20:00
July9:00–20:00
August9:00–20:00
September9:00–18:00
October9:00–16:00

September and October are still ahead, so the window is getting shorter. In September your last locking has to happen before 18:00, in October before 16:00. June was the exception, opening at 10:00. In every other month the lock starts at 9:00.

Guzianka near Ruciane-Nida works to a different schedule, because it has two chambers with separate hours. We set them out in our article on Guzianka lock: hours and fees 2026. Don't assume one lock's hours apply to the other.

You plan your day around the lock, not the lock around your day. Want to spend the night on Roś? Work backwards: how long Śniardwy will take, how long the canal, how long you might wait at the quay. Then add a buffer. Anyone who reaches the gates five minutes before closing risks spending the night on the wrong side of the lock.

How much does it cost to go through Karwik?

For a sports or recreational yacht (up to 15 tonnes deadweight or up to 12 passengers) you pay PLN 10.90 per locking between 7:00 and 19:00 and PLN 22.00 between 19:00 and 7:00. The fee is per vessel, not per person. That is what the Wody Polskie 2026 locking price list says, based on the Minister of Infrastructure's announcement of 25 July 2025 on rates in force from 1 January 2026. Guzianka charges according to the same price list.

A trip to Roś means two lockings: one towards Pisz, one on the way back. In daytime that comes to PLN 21.80 for the whole excursion. There is also a detail that is easy to miss. From June to August Karwik works until 20:00, but the night rate starts at 19:00. If you lock through in that last hour, you pay PLN 22.00. From September the issue disappears, because the lock closes at 18:00.

Where is Karwik and how do you get there by yacht?

The Jegliński Canal links Lake Roś with Lake Seksty and, according to Wody Polskie, is 5.25 km long. Seksty connects to Śniardwy from the south, so in practice your route to Karwik starts on Śniardwy. The lock itself stands close to the Seksty end, about 600 m before the canal opens onto that lake. Beyond it there is a longer stretch of canal all the way to Roś.

The route goes like this: Mikołajki, Śniardwy, Seksty, the Jegliński Canal with Karwik lock, Roś, Pisz. The hardest part comes before the canal, not in it. In a breeze Śniardwy builds a short, steep chop, so you cross it in the morning or not at all. If the wind picks up in the afternoon, Karwik can wait until tomorrow. You can read more about the lake itself in our sailing guide to Śniardwy.

Another point: according to notice No. 2/2026, the Great Masurian Lakes waterways are suitable for daytime navigation only. A narrow canal after dark is no place for experiments. Even if the lock stayed open longer, you would still want to be moored up before sunset.

One more thing about the kilometre markers. Wody Polskie notices count the main waterway from the Pisz end. Karwik is at km 6+000 of the Pisz–Węgorzewo route, and the Łuczański Canal in Giżycko is around km 62.7. Formally, then, the waterway begins in Pisz on Lake Roś. For charter sailors it is a dead end: you go in through Karwik and come back the same way. We show how to fit this detour into a longer cruise in our two-week route around the Great Lakes, and a shorter version in our description of the southern Masuria route.

How do you know if Karwik lock is open?

The most recent example is from just a week ago. On 25 August 2026 the Białystok RZGW issued Navigation Notice No. 25/2026: because of a breakdown, Karwik lock was taken out of service and closed to navigation, with no reopening date given. The next day notice No. 26/2026 announced that the fault had been fixed and the lock was open again. It ended up being just one day. Even so, anyone who crossed Śniardwy on 25 August planning to spend the night in Pisz would have found the gates shut.

Notices are published by RZGW Białystok on gov.pl, in the inland navigation section (gov.pl/web/wody-polskie-bialystok/zegluga-srodladowa2). You can also ask about conditions on the waterway by phone: the Catchment Management Office in Giżycko, tel. 87 428 39 92, or the manager of the hydraulic structure, tel. 532 032 745. According to the August notices, you can call Monday to Friday between 7:00 and 15:00.

On any day you are heading for Karwik, check the notices in the morning before you cast off. If the lock is out of action, plan B is simple. Roś and Pisz are off the table, which leaves Śniardwy and the area around Mikołajki. Better to find out on the jetty than in the middle of the lake.

What is locking through Karwik like?

An afternoon on the Jegliński Canal. Alders lean over the water, the yacht waits at the quay for the lock keeper's signal. The gates open slowly, and further on, at the end of the canal, Roś lies flat as a mirror. That is how it looks on a quiet day. Nobody rushes anybody here.

The rules are the same as at Guzianka:

  • You approach and enter the lock under engine, with the sails down.
  • Fenders hang on both sides, because you don't know which wall the lock keeper will send you to.
  • Two lines, bow and stern, are ready, with a crew member standing by each one.
  • You don't tie the lines off tight. The water level changes, so the line has to be able to move.
  • You follow the lock keeper's instructions without arguing. You go in on the signal and come out on the signal.

Karwik evens out the difference in water level between Roś and Seksty. We described the full step-by-step procedure, including how to split roles among the crew, in the Guzianka article.

What awaits beyond the lock: Roś and Pisz

Roś is calmer water than Śniardwy and much quieter than the central waterway, because few people want to take the detour. You can read more in our sailing guide to Lake Roś. Pisz lies on the lake, where the Pisa river flows out.

Pisz is a town with proper facilities: shops, restaurants, supplies for the next few days. The town's official website recommends the neo-Gothic town hall from 1899–1900, which houses the Museum of the Pisz Region and a tourist information point. There is also a monument to Melchior Wańkowicz, author of "Na tropach Smętka", commemorating his 1935 kayak trip with his daughter, and a guarded town beach on Roś at al. Turystów. The marina opened in 2019 is already on the Pisa river, past the railway bridge, about 1.2 km from the lake. It has 36 berths with electricity and water. Before you head there, check the clearance under the bridge and whether your charter agreement covers that stretch.

There's no point pretending otherwise: Roś is a detour. Śniardwy both ways, two lockings, waiting at the quay. Realistically it is a 1–2 day out-and-back trip. On a one-week cruise it eats up a good chunk of your time, on a two-week one it fits in without any stress.

From Roś, right in Pisz, the Pisa river flows south towards the Narew. According to the notices it is an 80 km waterway. In 2026 whether it is navigable depends on water levels. April's notice No. 3/2026 kept it closed due to low water, and notice No. 19/2026 opened it from 30 July. The same notice warns about meanders and shallows and lists shallow spots along the whole river. Near the mouth of the Narew the transit depth drops to 0.70 m. Going down the Pisa towards the Narew is not a route for a charter yacht. The waters you are allowed to sail are defined in your agreement with the yacht owner, and you should not expect the Pisa to be among them.

One practical note: NaCzarter listings do not include yachts starting from Pisz. You sail onto Roś during your cruise, from ports on the main waterway, and you return to them.
