Two weeks is enough time to sail the Great Masurian Lakes route at a truly relaxed pace — no rush, with time for castles, swims in quiet bays and evenings in lakeside taverns. The full north-to-south route, from Węgorzewo to Pisz, is roughly 132 km and can be covered in 7–10 days, so 14 days gives you plenty of slack: shorter legs, rest days and room for Masuria's changeable weather. Below is a realistic day-by-day plan — you pick up your boat at one of our bases, and NaCzarter, with over 25 years on the market, will help you choose the yacht and book it online.

Days 1–2: Węgorzewo and Lake Mamry

Starting at the northern end has its charm — Mamry is Poland's second-largest lake (about 105 km²), and the waters around Węgorzewo are often less crowded than central Masuria. Day one is usually check-in, provisioning and a short shakedown sail. The most convenient boat for this leg comes from our base — see the yacht charter in Węgorzewo.

  • Day 1: check-in, supplies, overnight in Węgorzewo or a nearby bay.
  • Day 2: sailing across Mamry (Kirsajty, Dargin, Kisajno) — about 3–4 h under sail in moderate wind.

Days 3–4: Sztynort and a stop steeped in history

Sztynort sits on a peninsula dividing Mamry, Kirsajty and Dargin, and is one of the most iconic ports on the route, with around 450 moorings. It is also a place of great history: the Baroque Lehndorff palace (its main part from 1689–1691) and an avenue of oaks, the oldest of which are 300–400 — and a few up to 600 — years old. The last heir, Heinrich von Lehndorff, took part in the failed assassination attempt on Hitler on 20 July 1944.

  • Day 3: a short hop to Sztynort, a walk through the park and the oak avenue, evening in port.
  • Day 4: a rest day or a slow sail south across Kisajno toward Giżycko.

Days 5–6: Giżycko — the swing bridge and Boyen Fortress

Giżycko is the heart of Masuria and a natural hub. The town is split by the Giżycki (Łuczański) Canal with its famous swing bridge — in season (typically 1 April to 31 October) it opens for water traffic in fixed windows, most often around 10:30–11:00, 12:35–13:00, 14:00–14:35 and 17:25–18:25. Times and rules can change (some years involve renovation), so check the current schedule just before your trip. Above the town stands the 19th-century Prussian Boyen Fortress (built 1844–1856), guarding the isthmus between Kisajno and Niegocin. A handy boat for this leg comes from the yacht charter in Giżycko.

  • Day 5: pass through the canal and bridge, moor in the marina, visit Boyen Fortress.
  • Day 6: sail across Niegocin and the canal system (Jezioro Boczne, Jagodne) — about 3–5 h.

Days 7–8: Tałty, Tałtowisko and around

The middle of the route is a chain of narrow, scenic lakes linked by canals: Szymon, Tałtowisko, Tałty. These legs are sheltered from strong wind — ideal for easy sailing and swimming in quiet coves. Along the way you'll find plenty of marinas with taverns and spots for a wild overnight.

  • Day 7: sail through the canals onto Tałtowisko and Tałty.
  • Day 8: a slow day — swimming, short trips, arriving near Mikołajki.

Days 9–10: Mikołajki and Lake Mikołajskie

Mikołajki is Masuria's sailing capital — a buzzing promenade, restaurants and one of the best-equipped marinas on the route. It's a good moment to restock, take a longer stop and swap crew if you plan such a manoeuvre. You can also pick up or drop off a boat here — see the yacht charter in Mikołajki.

  • Day 9: enter Lake Mikołajskie, moor in town, sightseeing and provisions.
  • Day 10: prepare for the Śniardwy crossing.

Days 11–12: Śniardwy — the Masurian sea

Śniardwy is Poland's largest lake (about 113.8 km²), but also the shallowest and most temperamental — its average depth is only about 5.8 m, and glacial boulders lurk on the shallows. When the weather turns suddenly, waves can build to 1–1.5 m within minutes, and so-called white squalls are a real danger here. Plan the crossing for the morning, on a stable forecast, and don't set out above 6°B. It is open water that rewards the cautious with space and freedom.

  • Day 11: cross Śniardwy toward Bełdany — start early, with time to spare.
  • Day 12: sail through Bełdany toward the Guzianka lock.

Days 13–14: Ruciane-Nida, the Guzianka lock and the finish in Pisz

At the southern end of the route waits the Guzianka lock — an iconic point through which around 20,000 vessels pass each year. The old Guzianka I lock (a 44 m chamber) has worked since 1899, while the new Guzianka II (50 m) has greatly improved traffic and can handle a dozen yachts at once. Beyond the lock opens the lovely Lake Nidzkie and Ruciane-Nida in the heart of the Pisz Forest; you can pick up or drop off a boat at the yacht charter in Ruciane-Nida. To complete the whole route, sail on through the longest Masurian canal — the Jegliński (about 5.25 km) — and via the Karwik lock onto quiet Lake Roś, down to Pisz.

  • Day 13: lock through Guzianka, Lake Nidzkie and Ruciane-Nida.
  • Day 14: optionally the Jegliński Canal and Lake Roś to Pisz, hand back the boat.

A few practical notes to finish

The whole route blends open lakes and sheltered canals, so 14 days give you the comfort to react to the weather. You don't have to return the boat to your start base — convenient one-way options run between our marinas.
