Can you swim from a yacht in Masuria

Yes. Neither the inland navigation regulations nor any other law generally prohibits swimming from a yacht, but outside a designated bathing area you are swimming somewhere unsupervised, with no lifeguard. It is not allowed where there is a no-swimming sign, where the port regulations forbid it, and in nature reserves. Swimming in a prohibited place can get you a fine of up to 250 PLN.

Article 55 of the Polish Code of Petty Offences states: “Anyone who bathes in a place where it is prohibited is liable to a fine of up to 250 PLN or a reprimand.” The Water Law Act distinguishes between a bathing area, that is a section of water designated by the municipal council and marked, and a place occasionally used for bathing. Both must be watched by lifeguards. The rest of the lake is for general use, including recreation and water sports, but nobody is watching over you there.

Where you may not swim

The first limit is a no-swimming sign. The second is the port regulations. The port regulations in Sztynort forbid swimming in the harbour basins, and yachts are manoeuvring in every port, so you do not jump into the water between the quays.

The third limit is nature reserves. The Nature Conservation Act prohibits “swimming and sailing” in them outside waters designated by the regional director for environmental protection. The safest assumption is that bathing falls under this too. Reserves along the route include Lake Łuknajno by Śniardwy, Jezioro Dobskie, all 20 islands on Mamry and Kisajno, and Jezioro Nidzkie where the navigable route ends.

The fourth is the waterway itself. The navigation regulations prohibit diving and underwater swimming where this obstructs navigation, that is on vessel routes, in front of port entrances and near places where vessels are moored. An anchored yacht must not block the waterway either. So swim from a yacht lying in a bay, away from the fairway and from waters where motorboats tow water-skiers.

Supervised bathing areas along the route in the 2026 season

Bathing areas are designated every year by the municipal council in a resolution adopted by 20 May, and the bathing season falls between 1 June and 30 September. The list for 2027 will therefore only appear in spring. The table shows the bathing areas along the route in the 2026 season.

Source: the lists of bathing areas for the 2026 season published by the sanitary inspectorate (sanepid) in Olsztyn and Wody Polskie (the Polish water authority). Some bathing areas belong to resorts, so ask before you visit whether they let in outside guests.

In 2026 there was no designated bathing area in Ruciane-Nida, Wilkasy or Sztynort. Mazurski Park Krajobrazowy (the Masurian Landscape Park) did not have a single one within its boundaries, and people swim there at customary spots, without a lifeguard. These include the “Goły Rożek”, “Przy Siatce” and “Niska” camping fields in the Ruciane-Nida municipality, the beach in Wejsuny, the “Flosek” and “Koło Promu” tent fields in the Mikołajki municipality, and the Szeroki Ostrów peninsula on Śniardwy. The park lists swimming in undesignated places among its hazards. By the port in Wierzba, approx. 100 m from the quay, there is an unsupervised bathing area.

What the water is like in summer

IMGW (the Polish meteorological institute) does not measure the temperature on Niegocin, Mikołajskie or Śniardwy. The nearest lake in its measurement network is Dejguny, in the Giżycko and Ryn municipalities. In July 2024 the water there averaged 22.6°C, ranging from 19.3 to 25.0°C. In July 2025 the average was 20.0°C, and in August 19.8°C. So in July and August expect 20 to 23°C near the shore, up to approx. 25°C in a heatwave. On open water and in wind it is cooler.

The second issue is blue-green algae (cyanobacteria). You can recognise a bloom by yellowish-green, murky water, foam or a scum on the surface. Contact with such water irritates the skin and eyes and can also cause stomach upsets, and a bathing area with a bloom must be closed. In August 2022 the sanitary inspectorate imposed a temporary swimming ban on the beach in Mikołajki because of a blue-green algae bloom, and in August 2025 it lifted a temporary ban at the municipal bathing area in Giżycko. The current status of bathing areas is published by the bathing water service of the Chief Sanitary Inspectorate. If the water looks suspicious, do not go in; symptoms and what to do are described in our guide on blue-green algae and safe swimming.

How to swim safely from a yacht

Drop anchor in a sheltered bay away from the waterway and switch off the engine before anyone goes into the water. We describe step by step how to anchor properly so the yacht does not drift. One person stays on board and watches the swimmers. Before you jump, check how you will get back on board. The regulations do not require a stern ladder on a recreational yacht, so at handover ask the yacht owner whether the yacht has one and how to fold it out. Without a ladder, climbing from the water onto the side can be difficult.

A child who cannot swim wears a life jacket on deck. The regulation on safety in water tourism states that a person who cannot swim should wear a life jacket or buoyancy aid on board, and the skipper decides on safety equipment. How to choose the right size is explained in our article on life jackets for children.

Do not go into the water after drinking alcohol. According to the police, 292 people drowned in Poland in 2025. Most often while swimming in an unsupervised place (37 cases), and alcohol was the cause of 58 drownings. In an emergency call 112 or 601 100 100; what else to do is covered in our guide on how to call for help in Masuria.

Frequently asked questions

Can I be fined for swimming from a yacht? Only if you swim where it is prohibited, e.g. by a no-swimming sign or in a harbour basin whose regulations forbid swimming. You then face a fine of up to 250 PLN or a reprimand under Article 55 of the Code of Petty Offences.

Is there a supervised bathing area in Wilkasy? There was none in the 2026 season. Wilkasy, Sztynort and Ruciane-Nida had no designated bathing area.

When does the bathing season start in Masuria? Each municipality sets it, within the period from 1 June to 30 September. In 2026 the bathing areas along the route opened between 13 June and 1 July and usually operated until the end of August.

Can I swim in the port? Better not. The port regulations in Sztynort explicitly forbid swimming in the harbour basins, and yachts are manoeuvring in every port.

What is the water temperature in the lakes in July? On Lake Dejguny, the IMGW measuring point nearest the route, the average in July 2024 was 22.6°C, and in July 2025 20.0°C. Other questions crews ask in port are collected in our questions to ask the harbour master.
