Masuria in October: sail or stay on land?
You can still sail in Masuria in October, but it is the end of the season. Locks run shorter hours (Guzianka I until 17:00, Karwik until 16:00), the sun sets earlier every day, and the number of priced offers drops week by week. In return you get empty harbours, mist over the water and forests in autumn colours.
We covered September separately, in our piece on sailing in Masuria in September. October means less daylight and more planning.
A typical morning goes like this. You wake up in an empty harbour. Mist lies on the water like cotton wool, the heater hums, tea steams from the thermos and the jetty is white with frost. Around noon the sun burns through the mist and the forest on the shore turns yellow. In the evening you can have a barbecue, but on land, in a designated spot. Grilling on board a charter yacht is not allowed, in autumn either.
Can you still charter a yacht in October?
Yes, but the choice gets smaller every week. We counted the houseboats listed on NaCzarter with a price for the Saturday to Sunday night. At the end of September there were 69 from 13 owners. On Saturday 3 October only 27 (7 owners), on 10 October 26 (6), on 17 October 13 (4) and on 24 October 10 (3). For the night of 31 October there is not a single priced offer.
Sailing yachts follow the same pattern: the closer to the end of the month, the fewer offers and the fewer owners still renting. Book an October trip for the start of the month, not the last weekend. You can see what is available in the coming days on our last minute charters in Masuria page.
There is an upside too. Outside peak season it is easier to get a charter shorter than Saturday to Saturday. The owner sets the charter length, so just ask. The deposit and mandatory fees, such as final cleaning, are settled on site, just like in summer.
Does a yacht need heating in October?
A yacht without heating in October means a night in a sleeping bag at a few degrees above zero. Heating is fitted on 87 of the 96 houseboats listed on NaCzarter (from 19 owners) and on roughly three quarters of sailing yachts (94 of 126). Check it in the equipment list of the specific offer. Also ask the owner how the boat is heated when you are not plugged into shore power. You will find an overview of floating homes on the houseboats in Masuria page.
What are the lock and Giżycko bridge hours in October?
The Great Masurian Lakes route is open in October, but locks run shorter hours and you may only navigate in daylight. Wody Polskie published the October 2026 hours in Navigation Notice No. 2/2026 of 21 April 2026:
- Guzianka I: 10:00–17:00,
- Guzianka II: 9:00–17:00,
- Karwik: 9:00–16:00,
- Przerwanki: 8:00–16:00, in October on working days only.
The same notice states plainly that the waterways are suitable for daytime navigation only. With sunset around 17:30, trying to squeeze through a lock at the last minute makes no sense. Fees and how locking works are described in our article on the Guzianka lock.
From 1 September to 31 October the swing bridge in Giżycko opens for boats by prior phone arrangement. The operator, Zarząd Dróg Powiatowych w Giżycku, lists the number 726 888 878 for this, and the staff set the time of passage. Call well in advance, not from right in front of the bridge. Details are in our article on the swing bridge in Giżycko.
In 2026 there is also construction of a bridge on the Giżycko bypass. According to the bridge schedule published by the operator, the Łuczański Canal is closed to vessels without authorisation for this reason. Wody Polskie direct yachts heading from Niegocin to Kisajno along a side route: Niegociński Canal, Lake Tajty, Piękna Góra Canal. When you call about the bridge, ask straight away whether you can pass through the canal or need to take the detour.
The warning masts for dangerous weather run seasonally. In 2026 the system started on 1 May, and Wody Polskie usually announce the switch-off date in October. In 2024 the masts went dark on 21 October, in 2025 on 1 November. So towards the end of the month do not count on a flashing light. Check the forecast yourself, morning and evening.
At the end of the season some of the navigation marks are also removed from the water. In 2024 the reduction began on 21 October, in 2025 on 20 October. On unfamiliar water stay in the channel and ask in the harbour what the current situation is. The route is closed for winter by a Wody Polskie notice. In 2025 it was Navigation Notice No. 38/2025 of 21 November 2025, which closed the main route and side routes from 24 November.
What time does it get dark in Masuria in October?
In October the day in Giżycko gets more than two hours shorter, and on the night of 24 to 25 October the clocks go back an hour. On 1 October the sun rises around 6:33 and sets around 18:12. On 15 October it is 6:59 and 17:38. On 31 October, after the clock change, sunrise is around 6:30 and sunset around 16:03.
You will feel the clock change most. On Saturday 24 October the sun sets in Giżycko around 17:18, on Sunday already around 16:16. So plan the day like this: set off after breakfast as the mist lifts, cover a shorter leg than in summer and be in the harbour before dusk. Mooring to piles or on a mooring line in the dark, on a wet deck, is asking for trouble. You end up fishing for the mooring line with a boathook by torchlight.

Śniardwy and Mamry build a short, steep chop in a breeze. Cross those lakes in the morning or not at all.

What to see in Masuria in October?
In October the Masurian forests turn yellow, skeins of cranes and wild geese fly over the lakes, and the red deer rut is coming to an end. On land you have historic sites and small towns without the crowds.
In October and November skeins of cranes cross Poland heading west and south, and wild geese leave too. According to the Iława Forest District, the red deer rut lasts from the second half of September to mid October. So at the start of the month you may still hear stags roaring in the Masurian forests.
What to do on land?
Giżycko has Boyen Fortress. The fortress guide sets out three sightseeing trails: red, blue and green. Check the opening hours for the interiors outside the season before you go. We write more in our guide to Boyen Fortress. In October, Giżycko and Mikołajki mean a stroll along the waterfront without the July crowds and a table without waiting, wherever places are still open.
You can pick mushrooms in state forests, but not everywhere. The Forests Act bans entry to, among other places, forest plantations up to 4 m high and wildlife refuges, and as a rule picking is not allowed in nature reserves. The forest district manager can also temporarily close a forest to visitors. Only put species in your basket that you know for certain.
Can you still sail in Masuria in November?
From November there are no prices for trips in NaCzarter offers, and the boats are hauled out. The locks still operate, but briefly and selectively. In 2025, from 1 November they were open only on working days from 8:00 to 14:00, and passage had to be booked the day before. The swing bridge is closed to boat traffic from November to March. For charter, that is the end of the season.
In winter you visit Masuria from land. There are walks along empty shores and winter swimming, and in hard frost ice yachting and skating. Only go onto ice where it has been checked and declared safe. You cannot judge ice thickness from the shore.
Winter is also a good time to plan next season calmly, while there is still plenty of choice for July and August.
