Is Masuria worth visiting in winter
Yes, as long as you do not expect winter on demand. From November to March ice and snow do come, but less and less often. The Wolf's Lair, Boyen Fortress, the indoor ice rink and winter swimming work whatever the frost. For a sailor it is the time to choose a yacht for 2027, because the long weekends go first.
Ice yachts top 100 km/h, but only when there is ice
An ice yacht is a sailing sled on runners, and in Poland the racing is mostly in the DN class. According to Gazeta Morska it tops 100 km/h in regattas. Medals from the 2026 championships went to sailors of MKŻ Mikołajki and Giżycka Grupa Regatowa, a Giżycko racing club.
Ice yachts need wind and thick, smooth ice with no snow. Regattas are usually held in January and February, and the lake and the date are set a few days before the start. The IDNIYRA notice of race named Niegocin at Giżycko as the main venue of the DN World and European Championships from 14 to 21 February 2026. The ice never came. After attempts on Lake Jamno near Mielno and in Sweden, the regatta was sailed on Lake Bukowo by the Baltic. For winter 2026/2027 the IDNIYRA calendar has no major championship in Poland.
We know of no one selling ice yacht rides or lessons to visitors for the 2026/2027 season. For tourists that leaves watching. Once the ice sets, follow the announcements of the Giżycko and Mikołajki clubs, because regattas are called from one day to the next.
When the lakes freeze and how not to fall through the ice
Between 1951 and 2010 Lake Mikołajskie was ice-covered on average from 30 December to 20 March, that is 76 days. The thickest ice of the season averaged 32 cm, the record is 65 cm (Przegląd Geograficzny, 2014). A 2020 study of Śniardwy shows that ice forms 5.3 days later per decade and is 2.4 cm thinner per decade. Some winters bring almost no ice, sometimes two in a row. Winter 2025/2026 was a frosty exception. After nights down to minus 20 degrees all the great lakes froze over before mid-January. Niegocin, as the duty officer of the Masurian Volunteer Water Rescue Service (MOPR) said, "froze last of the great Masurian lakes", because the wind kept breaking the sheet.
According to MOPR you step onto the ice only after several days of frost and at a thickness of at least 10 cm. The first ice forms in harbours and bays while the middle of the lake is still open, and by jetties and in canals it is uneven. Snow cuts the load capacity by 10 to 30 percent. In January 2021 the ice gave way under anglers on Kisajno and on Tałty, and three people died. In February 2025 it gave way under a car on Śniardwy. You never drive onto a lake. Where to go winter swimming in Masuria
The "Zimny Ptak" winter swimming club has been active in Giżycko since 2020. Swimmers mostly go into Niegocin at Giżycko and Czos at Mrągowo. At weekends there are joint dips with the clubs, so write to them before you come. The 2024 programme of "Mikołajki w Mikołajkach" included a St Nicholas Day dip, so check this year's edition.
A few rules: never go in alone, start with a minute or two, keep a hat on, no alcohol, and with a heart condition see a doctor first.
Short slopes and an ice rink that always works
The Piękna Góra slope is in Gołdap (not to be confused with Piękna Góra near Giżycko) and has five lifts, 2.3 km of runs and 80 m of vertical drop. Closer to the lakes are two small centres. Góra Czterech Wiatrów in Mrągowo, above Czos, has two short T-bar lifts and runs of 300 to 400 m. Nearest to Giżycko is the lift at Okrągłe near Wydminy. The ski season here usually runs from late December to early March, provided it snows. Paweł Paśnikowski of Góra Czterech Wiatrów told PAP in January 2024 that "there were no winters in the last two years, so we ran the hill for literally a few days". In autumn there were still no price lists or opening dates for the 2026/2027 season.
The weather-proof option is the indoor ice rink in Giżycko. Under the price list in force since 2 April 2026 an hour of skating costs 18 PLN (reduced 12 PLN), skate hire 12 PLN per pair per hour. Sleigh rides and cross-country trails depend on snow, so ask locally about what is on offer.
What to visit when there is no snow
In winter it is empty where people queue in summer. The Wolf's Lair at Gierłoż has off-season prices from 1 November 2026 to 30 March 2027. Ticket 25 PLN, reduced 20 PLN, children up to 6 free, car parking 15 PLN. Check the winter opening hours before you go, the official price list does not give them. Boyen Fortress in Giżycko is open from November to March from 9:00 to 16:00, the ticket office closes an hour earlier. Mikołajki has its own festival, "Mikołajki w Mikołajkach" (St Nicholas Day in Mikołajki), and with it the Christmas market from 4 to 6 December 2026. This year the market moves to the square between Plac Wolności and Aleja Żeglarska. In 2024 there were a Christmas tree, a parade of Santas, reindeer and a winter dip, while the 2026 programme had not been announced by late October. The Giżycko and Mrągowo town calendars list no Christmas markets for 2026 yet. For a rainy day there is the hotel water park in Mikołajki (pools, slides, saunas), open daily until 21:00. Winter school holidays in 2027 fall from 15 to 28 February in Warmia-Masuria and from 1 to 14 February in Mazovia.
What a sailor does in winter
In autumn 2025 Wody Polskie, the state water authority, began removing the waterway marks on 20 October. From 1 November the locks worked only on weekdays from 8:00 to 14:00, until the ice came. In spring 2026 the waterway opened on 24 April, and the 2027 dates have not been announced yet. In 2027 the holidays fall badly. The May long weekend runs from Saturday 1 May to Monday 3 May, three days. Corpus Christi falls on Thursday 27 May and with one day off gives a cruise until Sunday. If someone in the family misses the lake, a cruise as a gift with no fixed date fits under the Christmas tree. If the crew lacks a licensed skipper, winter is a good time for theory and for getting a licence for the 2027 season.
