One-way yacht charter in Masuria: what it costs and when it makes sense

You normally return the yacht where you picked it up. One-way charter is a surcharge option with some owners: when it pays off, how long Węgorzewo to Ruciane-Nida takes and how to get back to your car.

Do you have to return the yacht to the same port

Yes, as a rule you return the yacht at the port where you picked it up. A one-way charter, meaning a return at a different port, is an option with some owners, for a surcharge and by prior arrangement. In the NaCzarter offer (as of autumn 2026) a small share of boats has it, roughly one in eight, most often motorboats. The option appears in the online quote when you select a different return port.

The median surcharge in these offers is 350 PLN, the highest 400 PLN. With some owners on the market it runs from a few hundred to about 2000 PLN, sometimes priced individually. In the booking summary the surcharge sits on a separate line, next to the charter price.

How it works in practice

In owners' price lists this item is usually called "return at a port other than the home port" or "one way". The handover itself looks as usual, with the protocol, hull inspection, fuel level and deposit settlement.

Why owners rarely offer it

Because the yacht has to be brought back, which means an employee, a day or half a day on the water, fuel and the trip back by land. In peak season the calendar adds to it. Weeks run Saturday to Saturday, the return is in the morning between 8:00 and 10:00 and the pick-up between 16:00 and 18:00, and in those few hours a yacht sitting 40 km of water away will not come back cleaned to the port where the next crew starts. That is why in July and August one-way is often unavailable, unless the owner has another crew waiting at the destination port.

When one-way pays off, and when it does not

It makes the most sense on a linear route along the whole trail. From Węgorzewo to Ruciane-Nida is about 80 to 90 km by water, nearly 180 km both ways. That is a two-week cruise, as in our plan for Masuria in two weeks. With one-way you see the north and the south in a single week, without retracing the same route. A 350 PLN surcharge is a fraction of a second week of charter.

It also pays off for a family with small children, because the legs can be short and nobody has to think about the way back. Another good occasion is a forecast with a steady northerly, because you run south with it instead of beating back upwind across Śniardwy.

For a weekend one-way does not pay off, because over three days the surcharge is a hefty share of the price, and a loop around Niegocin and Kisajno will fill the time anyway. In peak season a loop is also the better choice, and one-way is best kept for June or September.

Linear routes: kilometres and time

Polish Waters (the state water authority, RZGW Białystok) puts the whole Great Masurian Lakes system at 145.6 km of waterways. The main trail alone, from Pisz to Węgorzewo, is just under 90 km. Wind and canals stretch the passage, so before you plan the legs, check how fast a yacht travels in Masuria.

RouteKm by waterTime under engine (estimate)Along the way
Węgorzewo → Giżyckoapprox. 25 km2.5–3 h, realistically 3–4 hMamry, Kisajno, swing bridge in Giżycko (detour via Tajty in 2026)
Giżycko → Mikołajkiapprox. 40 km4–5 h, realistically 5–6 hNiegocin, canals (approx. 7 km), Tałty
Mikołajki → Ruciane-Nidaapprox. 15–17 km1.5–2 h plus lockingBełdany, Guzianka lock
Węgorzewo → Ruciane-Nidaapprox. 80–90 km8–10 h of pure running, realistically 3–5 daysbridge in Giżycko, canals, Guzianka lock

Distances per Polish Waters, and the times are our estimate at 8 to 10 km/h under engine, without waiting for the bridge and the lock.

The Łuczański Canal in Giżycko was closed to navigation in the 2026 season because of the construction of a new bridge on the bypass. It opened only for the long weekends in May and June, and yachts took the detour through the Niegociński Canal, Lake Tajty and the Piękna Góra Canal.

According to the Polish Waters navigation notice, the Guzianka I lock ran from 10:00 to 21:00 in July and August 2026 and for shorter hours outside the peak, and in the peak there are queues, so allow an hour of margin. Fees and the remaining details are in our guide to the Guzianka lock. Navigation on the trail is permitted only in daylight. Check the 2027 bridge and lock hours, and whether the detour still applies, in the RZGW Białystok navigation notices before the season.

How to get back to your car

With one-way, the biggest hassle is getting back to the car. There are four ways to sort it out.

  • If the crew has two cars, you leave one at the return port before the cruise and drive back in the other to the pick-up port.
  • The southern part of the trail is served by a bus, one daily PKS Polonus regional service on the Warsaw to Giżycko line (2026 timetable). It leaves Giżycko at 14:10, reaches Mikołajki at 15:00, Ruciane-Nida at 15:35 and Pisz at 15:55. In the other direction it leaves Pisz at 10:55 and stops in Ruciane-Nida at 11:20, Mikołajki at 11:50 and Giżycko at 12:32. Local carriers run buses from Węgorzewo to Giżycko, and further south you change in Giżycko. One person goes for the car, the rest pack up the yacht.
  • The train only runs between Giżycko and Ruciane-Nida, with a change in Ełk, about 2.5 hours in total. Mikołajki and Węgorzewo have no working passenger stations.
  • A taxi is the fastest and the most expensive option, especially from Węgorzewo to Ruciane-Nida (over 80 km by road). Agree the price before you set off.

One bus a day is not much. After returning the yacht at 10:00 in Ruciane-Nida you wait for the Polonus until 11:20, you are in Giżycko at 12:32, and then drive another hour to collect the crew. If the car is in Węgorzewo, add a change in Giżycko and nearly an hour and a half of driving back. Before you go, also check parking for the duration of the cruise.

What to watch out for

Almost every yacht is returned between 8:00 and 10:00 in the morning on the last day. Some owners require the yacht to spend the final night already in the return port. Even if they do not, do it anyway. Plan the leg across Śniardwy or through Guzianka for the second-to-last day, because wind on the lake and the queue at the lock tend to shift the plan.

The return port and the surcharge amount should be in the booking confirmation, not just in a phone call, so if they are not there, ask the owner before paying.

Frequently asked questions

How much is the one-way charter surcharge? The median surcharge is 350 PLN, at most 400 PLN, and with other owners on the market it can reach about 2000 PLN.

Which ports come into play? Ports on the main trail, for example Węgorzewo to Giżycko, Giżycko to Mikołajki or the whole trail from Węgorzewo to Ruciane-Nida. You agree the specific pair with the owner, who needs someone at the return port.

How many days does Węgorzewo to Ruciane-Nida take one-way? Pure running under engine is 8 to 10 hours, so spread the route over 3 to 5 days and leave a spare day for wind and the lock.

Can I get a one-way charter in July and August? Harder than outside the peak, because the owner has to manage to move the yacht between charter weeks. Ask before booking, and in June and September consent comes more easily.
