Yacht fuel: agree the arrangements before setting off
When collecting the yacht, confirm the fuel type, tank level and how fuel will be settled after the trip. Ask for consumption information for that particular boat and refuelling locations along your route. Do not apply one litres-per-hour figure to every sailing yacht or houseboat. Match your refuelling plan to the engine, route and conditions.
Fuel affects both your budget and the order of stops. Settle the details alongside your itinerary rather than leaving them until the final morning. “The yacht is fuelled” does not explain how the starting level is measured or how much must remain when you return.
A full tank or settlement on return?
Check the particular charter's terms. Grupa Czarter describes a full-to-full arrangement. MazurskieCzartery require a full tank on return and provide for a charge for fuel added if it has not been topped up. These are examples of operators' practices, rather than rules shared by every offer. Sources: Grupa Czarter, MazurskieCzartery.
Ask how the level will be confirmed at collection and return. If charges depend on the amount added by staff, establish the rate, any service charge and the document confirming quantity. If engine running time is used, record the initial reading and the calculation that actually applies under the agreement.
| What to agree at collection | What to record | Why revisit it at return |
|---|---|---|
| Fuel and tank | Correct fuel type, filler identification and reading method | Refill the correct tank with the correct fuel |
| Starting level | Agreed level or quantity and a photo of the reading | Compare the beginning and end of the trip |
| Settlement | Required return level or charging method | Check the basis of the bill |
| Consumption | Figures for this boat and the conditions they describe | Assess your plan without guessing consumption |
| Refuelling | Planned station and an alternative if the route changes | Avoid leaving refuelling until handover |
A photo of the gauge is useful once you have been shown how to read it on this yacht. Ask whether the tank also supplies other equipment and whether that consumption is included in the calculation. Do not assume an extra system exists simply because the boat you previously hired had one.
Why we do not give one fuel-consumption figure for Masuria
A result for a particular boat-and-engine combination does not automatically apply to another vessel. Yamaha's performance bulletins explain the influence of factors including boat weight, wind and water conditions. Test figures are described as approximate. Ask the operator about consumption for your intended use. Engine power alone is not a ready-made calculation of a week's costs. Short manoeuvres in a sailing yacht raise a different question from daily passages in a houseboat under power. It also matters whether the figure comes from measurements or a staff estimate.
For an initial budget, use expected engine running time and a confirmed consumption range. Multiply the estimated fuel quantity by the price used for planning, and account separately for any refuelling service. This is an estimate; the final settlement should follow the agreed method.
During the trip, keep a simple record of refuelling dates, quantities, receipts and any available meter reading. You can then compare the plan with actual purchases. When buying fuel in a can, also record how much remains at the end, so total purchases are not mistaken for engine consumption.
Include refuelling in the route, including outside summer
In its announcement for summer 2026, ORLEN lists Masurian waterside stations in Giżycko, Mikołajki, Sztynort, Węgorzewo and Ryn. It highlights their seasonal operation. A station's position on a map therefore does not confirm availability on any date of the year. Source: ORLEN's waterside-station information.
Before the trip, check whether your chosen station operates on your dates, supplies the fuel you need and can serve your vessel. Confirm current opening hours before approaching. For an autumn charter in particular, do not rely on a summer timetable saved in an old guide.
Schedule refuelling before the return deadline becomes pressing. Agree with staff a reserve appropriate to the particular boat and route, and what to do when the level is low. Do not plan to reach a station with an empty tank. Reassess the fuel plan whenever you change the route.

Safe refuelling: follow your own boat's instructions
Before refuelling for the first time, ask to be shown the correct filler and procedure for the yacht, tank and engine. Confirm the required fuel type; the boat's model name is not enough to determine it. If you cannot identify the filler confidently, stop preparations and contact staff.
Yamaha's manual for the F2.5A, F4B, F5A and F6C calls for securely mooring in a well-ventilated place and stopping the engine before refuelling. It prohibits smoking and nearby ignition sources and warns against overfilling. For the portable tanks described, it specifies filling after removal from the boat. This example does not replace the instructions for the equipment you receive. Operate vents, valves and systems according to its documentation and your handover briefing. Do not improvise with containers or fuel mixtures. If unsure, ask staff for help before adding fuel.
Frequently asked questions
Is fuel included in the charter price? Check the chosen offer's terms. The fuel level when the boat is handed over and who pays for consumption are separate arrangements.
How many litres per hour does a houseboat use? You need information for the particular yacht and engine, together with the operating conditions. A single figure for the whole category is not a reliable planning basis.
Is refuelling before entering the harbour enough? Agree the required return level and how the passage from the station to the handover berth is treated. Keep the fuel receipt.
Do all Masurian waterside stations open in autumn? Do not assume so. They operate seasonally, so confirm availability for your sailing dates with the particular operator.
Compare yachts available in Masuria. Once you choose a boat, finalise the fuel plan with the person handing it over at the harbour.
