Operation Boyen 2026 — Boyen Fortress Festival in Giżycko from the Deck of a Yacht
Picture this: in the morning you moor in Giżycko, stow the sails, and after a short walk you find yourself standing before the mighty ramparts of Boyen Fortress — when suddenly the cannons roar, the cavalry charges, and battlefield smoke drifts over the bastions. This is Operation Boyen, the Boyen Fortress Festival — one of the largest historical re-enactments in Masuria. In 2026 the event takes place on 7–9 August, and our marina in Giżycko lies just a stone's throw from the fortress. It's the perfect "day ashore" in the middle of a charter.
What you'll see — a battle re-enactment and much more
The heart of the festival is the great spectacle "Battle for Boyen Fortress" — a full battle re-enactment featuring several hundred re-enactors from Poland and abroad. The fortress comes alive as it was in the early 20th century, full of uniforms, gunpowder and history.
- Battle re-enactment with infantry, artillery and pyrotechnic displays
- Mounted cavalry in action on the fort's approaches
- Fair and militaria market — stalls with crafts, souvenirs and gear
- Kids' zone: workshops, activities and shows — family fun from the youngest age
It's an event that impresses adults and draws the kids in. Loud and spectacular, yet safe and done with class — the fortress has a setting for it that has been proven over the years.
From the marina in Giżycko straight to the bastions
The biggest advantage? Logistics. From the Ekomarina and the marinas in central Giżycko to Boyen Fortress at ul. Turystyczna 1 it's a mere 1.5–2 km — literally a walk. You don't have to plan a whole day around a car: in the morning you sail across Lake Niegocin, moor up, head to the re-enactment, and in the evening you return on board. If you're planning a charter for exactly this weekend, take a look at our yachts in Giżycko or, more broadly, the whole yacht rental in Masuria.
Tickets and practical details
Tickets for Operation Boyen are sold by the organiser — Boyen Fortress in Giżycko (online and at on-site ticket offices). We don't handle tickets — for current prices, opening hours and the full programme, visit the official website twierdza.gizycko.pl and the event's Facebook profile, as the detailed re-enactment schedule tends to be finalised right before the festival. In August the fortress is open widely throughout the day (the ticket office closes an hour before closing time), so you can easily combine sightseeing with the shows.
If you'd like to get to know the fortress itself in more depth, read our guide to Boyen Fortress, and during a longer stopover consider a trip to the Wolf's Lair in Gierłoż — the other must-see military site in the area.
